Peter O'O'Neill receives the preliminary report of the Commission of Inquiry into the Special Agricultural and Business Leases, SABL.

PNG Prime Minister: Peter O'neill
Prime Minister Peter O' Neill today received the preliminary report of the Commission of Inquiry into the Special Agricultural and Business Leases, SABL.

The 72-page report was presented by the Chief Commissioner, John Numapo and Commissioners Alois Jerewai and Nicholas Mirou to Mr O'Neill at his Parliament House office after almost 21 months since it was commissioned by the then Acting Prime Minister Sam Abal in June 2011.

Although incomplete, the preliminary report of the Commission of Inquiry has already uncovered major discrepancies especially within a number of government departments.

Mr O'Neill says certain government departments have seriously misunderstood their roles and legal requirements in relation to the SABLs.

The inquiry was tasked to inquire into the legal authority and procedures involved in the issuing of the SABLs as well as to examine all these leases.

The final report will be furnished within the next two months.

It has found a total of 72 SABLs spread across the country covering a total of 5.2 million hectares of customary land.

The Commissioners have told Prime Minister O' Neill it's a huge task and the details of these individual leases will be dealt with in the final reports.

Mr O'Neill says the interim report will be tabled in Parliament this coming session, which starts next Tuesday. NBC
