Bon Voyage! PNG Scholars Headed for the United States

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: U.S. Embassy Port Moresby is pleased to announce that the 2016-2017 J. William Fulbright Graduate Scholarship Program has two successful recipients this year. They are Mr. Eli Direye, a Research Analyst with the Bank of Papua New Guinea, and Ms. Poigeno Nazila, a Standards Engineer with the National Broadcasting Corporation. Mr. Direye and Ms. Nazila were selected for their academic merit and leadership potential.

Mr. Direye will commence his Master’s Program in Economics at Kent State University in Cleveland, Ohio while Ms. Nazila will enroll at Northeastern University’s Master’s Degree in Telecommunication Systems Management in Boston, Massachusetts.
Mr. Direye, from the Jiwaka province, graduated from the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics in 2011. Ms. Nazila comes from Morobe and Central province. She also graduated in 2011 from UPNG where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Science.

Mr. Direye and Ms. Nazila are very excited and looking forward to starting their program. They departed Port Moresby last Friday, July 22, to begin their program in the United States.
The J. William Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. In addition to receiving the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, recipients will also become part of the global network of renowned Fulbright alumni who have achieved distinction in government, science, the arts, business, philanthropy, education, and athletics. Among them are the 44 Fulbright alumni from 12 countries who are recipients of the Nobel Prize, the 81 alumni who have received Pulitzer Prizes; and 20 Fulbright alumni who have served as heads of state or government.
