Pacific Island countries denounce North Korea's provocations

A group of Pacific Island countries has condemned North Korea for its repeated nuclear and missile provocations.

According to the South Korea Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, the fourth Korea-Pacific Islands Senior Officials’ Meeting(SOM) was held in the southeastern port city of Busan on Tuesday.

Representatives present at the meeting adopted a chairman's statement which contained denouncement of the North for the first time.

The statement emphasised that the North’s development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles poses a grave threat to regional peace and stability.

It also confirmed the member states’ support for UN Security Council 2270 adopted in March following the North’s fourth nuclear test in January.

The meeting was attended by officials representing a total of 14 Pacific Island countries, including Papua New Guinea, Fiji and the Solomon Islands.
