Former Police Boss Toami Kulunga withdraws court challenge

Toami Kulunga withdraws case
Former Police Commissioner Sir Tom Kulunga has withdrawn a court case he filed to challenge the NEC decision that terminated him as Police Commissioner.

Sir Toami said in a statement yesterday that he had to withdraw the proceedings after careful thought on the continuity of the proceedings.

"My reason for instituting the proceedings was not based on personal interest to get back to the office of police commissioner," he said.

"I have served my time and reached my retirement age. I had less time left before my contract was up. It is no secret that I was removed and replaced as the Commissioner of Police after I made the decision to invite the Prime Minister for a police formal record of interview in relation to the alleged fraudulent payments to Paul Paraka lawyers."

He said he had instituted the proceedings because he feared that the image and integrity, as well as the command structure of the Royal PNG Constabulary he had toiled hard to build almost destroyed in a matter of days after his removal.

"I could not stand and watch the degrading of the integrity of the office of the Commissioner of Police and the Royal PNG Constabulary.

"I want to go in and restore the credibility of the police force before I moved on," Sir Toami said.

He said he however considered to withdraw the proceedings on personal grounds.
