PNG Electoral Commission does not recognise UPNG SRC

Students of the University of Papua New Guinea gathered as early as 8 o’ clock in the morning at the forum square to vote for the Referendum which was said to be conducted  by the Electoral Commission.

However , the Electoral Commission, told PNGFM when contacted  that the Electoral Commission does not recognise the UPNG SRC body and they won’t be conducting any Referendum today.

According to the Electoral Commission’s legal team, the SRC body has no powers to request for Referendum to be conducted and for that matter, the Electoral Commission will only respond upon the request from the UPNG Administration.
Meanwhile the Director for UPNG’s Public Relation Mr Jim Robins clarified the Administration’s stand that they will not have any say in the Referendum or how is conducted.
“The University administration cannot request for the Electoral Commission to conduct the referendum as we will be in contempt with court if we do that”
MR Robins also stressed on minster Tabar’s statement that student should return to class before Friday the 13th to avoid termination.
