PNG Air suspends Flights into Enga following continuous Tribal Fight near airport
The continuous fight between members of the same Itokon clan living several kilometers away from the Wapenamanda township area has forced the Board and Management of PNG Air Limited to indefinitely suspend its flights into Wapenamanda airport from Port Moresby.
In a statement from the airline company, PNG Air regrets to advise its customers and the traveling public that due to recent civil unrest in Wapenamanda district, all scheduled PNG Air flights into Enga Province have now been suspended effective as of 13th June 2023.
The statement indicated that this suspension will remain in place indefinitely until such time PNG Air can determine the safe operations of our services back into the province.
Meanwhile, the inter clan fighting between the Itokon Mupalu and Itokon Nenae subclans erupted on Sunday when the Mupalus killed a Nenae youth.
The police and Papua New Guinea Defence Force security team have been called into the area to prevent the escalating of this conflict.
The Itokon clan is part of the big Kewaip Tribe that lives along the main Highlands Highway sharing land boundary with the nearby Mukurumanda Correctional Service institution which is a few kilometres away from Wapenamanda airport.
