Brave police officer rewarded with new mobile phone from Digicel

A police officer from the Superintendent Operations Office in Boroko, who narrowly escaped death after an armed robbery early this week, was rewarded with a new top of the range mobile phone courtesy of Digicel and Oceanic Communications Limited (OCL) yesterday.
Constable Anthony Kendang and his colleagues were responding to an armed robbery at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Downtown Port Moresby on Monday morning when an armed suspect shot him. Luckily, the bullet missed his heart when it hit his mobile phone and power pack, which was in his pocket at the time of the incident.
The lucky police officer was saved by a mobile phone he had in his chest pocket, which acted as a shield for his heart when the bullet was fired.
Constable Kendang’s mobile phone was destroyed during the incident, but he received a new Alcatel Idol 3 smartphone from Digicel yesterday.
When presenting the mobile to Constable Kendang, Digicel’s Retail Director, Lorna McPherson, said the telecommunications company wanted to replace the brave police officer’s mobile phone as a way of thanking him for his service.
“Constable Kendang is a true hero for putting himself on the line to ensure the safety of our community,” she said.
“As a way of expressing our gratitude for Constable Kendang’s efforts, Digicel and OCL are proud to provide him with a new smartphone,” she said.
“The Alcatel Idol 3 is a top of the range 4G mobile phone valued at K1,000 and is a small token of our appreciation for the incredible work Constable Kendang has carried out in Port Moresby.”
Speaking on behalf of OCL, National Sales Manager, Philip Yam also thanked Constable Kendang for his bravery and contribution in maintaining order within Port Moresby.
“Such act of bravery and commitment as shown by Constable Kendang goes to show the good work that the police are doing within our communities. We must know that there are good citizens out there willing to risk their lives to ensure that our communities are safe,”
