PNG proposes for a free trade agreement with Fiji

Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has proposed to the Fiji government to consider the feasibility of a free trade agreement.    

PM O’Neill in his address at the Fiji parliament said expanding trade and investment is central to economic development.

He said trade and investment between both countries is growing but it could be better with free trade agreement. PM said he’d like for both countries to explore options for a free trade agreement.
PM said that he will leave this to both countries officials to discuss and advance, and to provide their opinions to elected leaders.PM O’Neill also extended an invitation to the Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama to attend the high-level APEC leader’s week and to attend the Pacific Island Leaders meeting with the Chinese President Xi Jinping during his State visit to PNG in the days before the APEC Leaders Meet.

“In keeping with our commitment to deliver a truly Pacific APEC , I am inviting the Leaders of all Pacific Islands Forum members to attend APEC,” PM said.

“It is important that we highlight the Pacific in Asia-Pacific and show APEC members from Russia in the west to Mexico in the East, that Pacific has a lot to offer,” he said.
