Singapore delegation to visit Papua New Guinea
Richard Maru |
Mr Maru said this company has its eyes set on securing a million canned fish from Papua New Guinea. However, he could not release the name of the company until the deal is signed.
He had extended the invitation to the company after they had approached him while on a three-day visit to the country.
He said he will be directing his officers in the Trade Department to travel with the delegation when they arrive to meet with all the companies processing fish in the country.
Mr Maru said he is excited as this poses a huge trade opportunity.
“Currently we have been targeting the European Union market because of the free access to market they offer.
“We have not been targeting the rest of Asia, this now opens up a wonderful opportunity,” the minister said.
“This will also support our plans to invest in the Pacific Marine Industrial Zone in Madang.”
In response to questions posed concerning the country’s ability to meet the volume, Mr Maru said: “That is what they are saying and I have invited them to come. Let them come meet with fishing companies and make that assessment.
“I am sure if we have to ramp up to meet the demand, we will be able to so long as we have long term contracts. But I can’t speak for the fishing industry, I will let the industry talk for itself,” he said.
He reiterated that the fact that a company is interested just to invest is good news for PNG.
