Papua New Guineans Need to Visit More of our Nation First
The Prime Minister was in the province to promote tourism in Papua New Guinea at the opening of the festival and the arrival of the first Brisbane to Alotau fight, and included visits to communities on Kwato, Samarai and Doini Islands.
He said with all of the changes and economic growth that is taking place in the country, he would like to see more Papua New Guineans travel around the nation as tourists.
“Even with the challenges we are facing at the moment, our economy continues to expand and more people are entering the middle income range,” PM O’Neill said.
“This is enabling more people to travel with their families for holidays.
“I hope more people will take the opportunity to visit other parts of Papua New Guinea for holiday instead of going overseas.
“We have a world of diversity all in one nation, so lets get to see as much of our own country first and spend your money with our small businesses.”
PM O’Neill said the 12th National Kenu and Kundu Festival in Alotau was an example of the quality of the domestic tourism attractions.
“The Kenu and Kundu Festival has a lot of significance in showcasing culture in our nation.
“It is my pleasure to return once again to this quality festival that already draws people from around Papua New Guinea and overseas.
“The festival was very well organized and for the spectators were shown a great display."
PM O’Neill reminded the people attending the festival that it was at the same event that he launched the cruise ship services that now visit Milne Bay, and on the first day of this year’s festival, the first Brisbane to Alotau flight arrived at Gurney Airport.
He said the changes people are seeing not only in Milne Bay, but in provinces and districts around the country, is positive change that is advancing the nation for the better.
“Today, you can see many changes happening around you. Changes you have never experienced in the last forty years.
“These are the results of good leadership and political stability in the government.
“Despite all the challenges, we have a hard working and committed Government for the people – your government,” PM O’Neill said.
“There has never been a better time to start taking ownership of the changes happening around you and participating in them.”
The Prime Minister and his delegation, that included Hon. Charles Abel, Hon. Frances Awasa and Hon Koi Tarape, attended the Kwato Church and visits with members of the public on Kwato, Samarai and Doini Islands
