Peace and stability: Vital componets to economical success
Peace and stability propels business growth and general prosperity says Yasuwa Kome, one of the leading tour operators in the Highlands Region of Papua New Guinea.
Kome is the principal owner of the Yaskom Resort Hotel located between the border of Wabag and Laigap- Pogera districts in Enga Province.
He was speaking to commemorate more than 10 years of peace and harmony and acknowledged the tireless work of churches in his area.
Kome is from Surinki government station, once a volatile area known for gruesome tribal fights and barbaric payback killings.
Today Surinki hosts the international recognized Yaskom Resort Hotel, an oasis of paradise, naturally hidden and camoflauged along the basin of the mighty Lake Surinki, the origin of many of the big, fast flowing rivers in the province.
Kome recalls being discouraged by his own families from venturing into tourism and expanding his businesses but he has stood the test of time to tell the people of Enga and the country that tribal fights and payback killings can be minimised and eradicated.
“My Surinki area negativley contributed towards the name tag, Wild West, as most people refer us (West Enga) but today my people are warriors of peace.”
“Today, Yaskom Resort Hotel’s net investment is valued at more than K26 million and is expected to grow in the years to come,” Kome said.
Yaskom Resort Hotel has 36 premium and deluxe self contained rooms, an internationally recognised restaurant, 3 spacious car parks which can hold more than 150 cars at one time, state of the art conference centre which can cater for a maximum of 150 participants and different packages for international tourists and guests to choose from.
Kome said that he was willing to invest more in tourism as tribal figts and payback killings are no longer prevalent in his area.
“I have pysically visited my people and told them the negative impacts of tribal fights. My peole are so afffectionate and resceptive. They are able to listen, analyse and obey,” Kome said.
“Tribal fight and payback killings have dramatically decreased and will be eradicated in the West Enga region, Kome said.”
Kome is regarded as the paramount chief in his area. He hails from the mighty Kunalin Tribe comprising of more than 25,000 people.
The Kunalin tribe’s territory stretches from the Surinki area into the nearby Ambum Valley in the Kompiam- Ambum electorate and further into the Lagaip-Pogera electorate.
Kome over the past 15 years have financially assisted mainstream churches (Catholic, Lutheran, Penrecoastal churches and SDA) to spreak the gospel into these volatile areas.
“I am physically present to escort missionaries and laymen into new work areas to enable the people to totally change their mindset,”Kome said.
Yaskom Resort Hotel has its own timber mill. The mill is fully equipped with the necessary machinery required to mill, cut and treat timber accordingly.
Much of the treated and sawn timber is used in the daily expansion of the resort.
Kome has also over the years financially assisted mainstream churches like the Catholic, Lutheran, Christian Apostolic Fellowship ( CAF) and the Seventh-Day Adventist Church ( SDA) churches in building their churches and pastor’s residences plus other associated works.
Kome wholly financed and built the Niccodemus Centre, run and managed by the Gutnius Lutheran Church, at a total cost of K500,000 which was offically opened and commissioned by Acting Governor General and Chief Justice of Papua New Guinea Sir Salamo Injia on January 03, 2016.
Kome is regarded as a ‘warrior of peace’ in his area and an ‘angel’ sent from Heaven to bring back peace, normalcy and promote sustainable living to the people of Surinki and the great Kunalin tribe as a whole.
The Yaskom Resort Hotel provides full time employment for more than 40 locals and supports the local economy by encouring the locals to supply their fresh produce, livestock and poulty to the resort.
