Police take control of University campus

Port Moresby Police have taken control of the University of Papua New Guinea after student rampage . The University Council  invited police to enter both the Waigani and Taurama campuses in the wake of the burning of one building and five vehicles at the Waigani campus.

Four of the vehicles burnt belonged to the University’s security force, Uniforce, whilst the fifth was a private vehicle. The building burnt was the University bookshop. It is believed that a number of university staff, including security officers, were injured in the latest spate of violence on Thursday.

Deputy Police Commissioner and Chief of Operations Jim Andrews said the latest actions by students are criminal actions and police forensic as well as criminal investigation officers are now on campus to investigate.

“Offenders will be identified will be charged accordingly,” Deputy Commissioner Andrews said.

He said police will now maintain a strong presence on both campuses to protect life and state assets as long as necessary.
