Tabar condemns actions of students at UPNG

Minister for Higher Education Malakai Tabar has condemned the actions of the University of Papua New Guinea students who have burnt down 5 vehicles and a building at the Waigani Campus.

The minister described their actions as criminals and not of intellectuals.

“They are behaving like criminals, they are not behaving like students so it is a police matter now and the police have been requested to identify and deal with those that were involved,” said Minister Tabar.

The minister is also calling on the minority rogue students whom he says have not shown interest in education at all, to vacate campus immediately and go home instead of disturbing genuine students who want to learn.

Minister Tabar adds, “It has come this far and a lot of students including students from Enga would like to go back to class but there is another group also from Enga who have been stopping everybody to go back to class, and I appeal to those students who don’t want to go back to class to simply go home.”

Meanwhile the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology together with the UPNG administration are planning to organize a reconciliation process that can bring students, the administration and the police to reconcile.

However, Minister Tabar said the reconciliation process will not just happen abruptly and for those students who are forcing the UPNG administration to apologize need to consider their actions first.

“The matter that has been pushed by the students has nothing to do with academic or the university and for the students to demand the University for an Apology is a bit unfair, the students on the other hand, have a lot of apology to make” said Minister Tabar. PNGFM News/ PNG Today
