World Vision donates to Earthquake victims in Papua New Guinea
Hundreds of families in six villages at the foot of Mt Bosavi in Kutubu Southern Highlands Province received relief from the World Vision Papua New Guinea response team last week.
The donation is a joint partnership effort between World Vision and the Evangelical Church of PNG that saw 7,500 Aqua tabs, 250 litre jerry cans and 125 fleece blankets distributed to families who were affected by the earthquake.
World Vision Response manager, Bonie Belonio said the area has been greatly affected and the items distributed were of great help especially for mothers and children.
Mr Belonio said it was in the best interest of the organisation to make a difference in the lives of the people, especially the mothers and the children who suffered the most from the recent earthquake.
He said the relief supplies were donated following the recent earthquake that left many in need of assistance.
“Several people are still traumatised because of the second wave of earthquake,” said Mr Belonio.
“We are looking forward to reaching out into other villages in the affected areas which will require airlift support as the only way of getting in the relief across.”
Janet Timmon, a beneficiary of the relief items said her family has been greatly affected during the disaster.
“My children have fallen ill with diarrhea, fever and common cold amongst others but I’m happy that the items distributed will be of help to my children,” she said.
ELCPNG Station Manager Tammy Beiyo also confirmed that the earthquake had destroyed most of the food gardens and water sources in the area and people are bound to such common diseases.
“We are now in need of food, water and clothing at the moment,” said Mr Beiyo.
Mr Beiyo also thanked the World Vision for the relief items and awareness programs conducted to the affected communities. Press Release
