PNG Government’s call on MSG to provide security praised

The Papua New Guinea  Government has been commended for its bold call on the MSG (Melanesian Spearhead Group) to mobilise its resources to provide security during the APEC summit in November.

MSG secretariat deputy director general, Peter Eafeare told the 8th MSG police commissioner’s conference in Kokopo, East New Britain that the MSG deployment could be an important leverage in enhancing security cooperation in MSG region for the future.

“Our participations no doubt will bring forward far-reaching impressions and influences to potential partners that with the combined resources, we are reaching out with maximum impacts,” he said.

“In doing so, it is building a solid platform for our security operations for the future,” he said.

“Against a backdrop of rising security threats to our region, it is critical that this strategy is in place at the earliest so as to enhance security operation, strengthen capacity building in our security apparatus and institutions, plugging legal deficiency in security laws and legislations, enhance sharing of information and intelligence and effectively managing borders,” he said.

Eafeare said equally important was the decision of the police ministers meeting relating to the provision of security assistance to the Royal PNG Constabulary for the APEC meetings.

“A successful APEC is a success not only to Papua New Guinea but to MSG and the wider region as well,” he said.
