Wera, Meninga named Captain and Vice-Captain of SP PNG Hunters
SP PNG Hunters team named Adex Wera as their 2019 skipper while Moses Meninga as his deputy.
Wera was surprised on receiving the news from coach Michael Marum before the official announcement was made at the Hunters 2019 season launching at Oil Search National Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Friday evening.
Wera will be supported by vice-captain Moses Meninga.
“I was shocked this afternoon (Friday) when coach (Marum) told me that I will take up this role to lead the boys in the 2019 season,” Wera said.
He said he was nervous but happy to lead the boys this year and thanked coach, the coaching staff, Hunters board, the sponsors and the supporters for supporting them again in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup competition.
Wera will play his 101 game in the Hunters opening match against Tweed Heads Seagulls at Piggabeen Sports Complex on March 10.
Wera, who is Hunter number six, is one of utility backs who has scored a total of 53 tries with a record 212 points as per SP PNG Hunters 2014-2018 records.
Wera is also one of those skillful players in the team who can step up to the scene when the team looks for that extra spark given his speed, footwork, ball handling and try scoring abilities.
His announcement as team captain was also backed by new recruits Jerry Teme and Daniel Tapol.
“Adex’s captaincy comes with is longest game appearance for Hunters and we are all happy for him to lead us,” said Teme.
Tapol, on his first appearance to train with the team, said Adex and Meninga have been supportive towards them (new recruits) and they possess the leadership roles.
“I believe in their captaincy and we will be all right,” said Tapol.
