Two Women committed to Trial for Conspiracy to defraud

Two women have been committed to stand trial at the National Court for conspiracy to defraud while the husband of one of the accused, who is said to be the main perpetrator, is still on the run.

The duo, identified as Roshni Ella and Nebira Ray are facing separate counts of conspiring to defraud and dealing with criminal property.

Senior Magistrate Cosmas Bidar this morning ruled that there was sufficient evidence for the pair to stand trial at the National Court for the alleged offense which took place between January 21 and February 04 this year.

It is alleged that during this period the husband of Roshni Ella had somehow obtained a cheque from a trust account worth 28-thousand-kina.

As the couple did not have an existing bank account, they are said to have approached Ray, who at that time was a co-worker of Ella, to use her account to deposit the cheque and make withdrawals which she allegedly agreed to.

Following the ruling to have the matter committed to trial, senior Magistrate Cosmas Bidar adjourned the matter to August 26 to allow for any response from the accused as accorded to them under section 96 of the District Court Act.

The magistrate also extended bail for Ray until the next mention while Ella, who has been granted bail, is still in custody as her bail has not been paid as yet.

Meantime Ella’s husband is said to have gone into hiding with police yet to have him arrested and charged.
