Bougainvilleans living in Port Moresby vote for referendum
Polling for the Bougainville Referendum opened on a quiet note in Port Moresby this morning.
Hundreds of voters turned up at the PNG Institute of Education to cast their votes without police presence.
Election Manager of the National Capital District, Terence Hetinu, told NBC News, he's impressed with the public involvement and conduct in the polling.
The National Capital District is among East and West New Britain provinces, Central and Madang, on mainland Papua New Guinea, which have started polling today, along with Buka Town.
All other centres will kick off polling on Monday.
Mr Hetinu says Port Moresby's voting population for the Referendum is over 3,000 when the Referendum Roll was finalized.
Polling in the capital city will take a day off tomorrow
(Sunday 24th) and resume on Monday and end on Friday.
Ballots from across the country and from Honiara and Gizo in the Solomon Islands, and Cairns and Brisbane in Australia, will all be transported to Buka for counting.
Results for the options of greater autonomy and independence will be announced soon after completion of counting, and the writ will be returned to the Governor General on or before December 20.
