No More Medical Treatment Overseas as PNG Government to setup Specialist Treatment Facilities within PNG

PATIENTS do not have to travel overseas to get specialist treatment if the Port Moresby General Hospital has specialists who can provide it, says Prime Minister James Marape.

He told a dedication service for public servants yesterday in Port Moresby that he had instructed the Health Department to have the nation’s biggest hospital provide specialist treatments which people travel overseas for.

“As prime minister, it would be silly and shameful of me if I am flown overseas to receive medical treatment (because) my own country cannot provide these services,” he said.

“So the Port Moresby General Hospital is moving into that space. There will soon be specialists in heart and kidney (diseases) and other specialist services (available here).

He said the Angau Memorial Hospital in Lae would become a national referral hospital for cancer patients.

“This is our big progress,” he said.

He said the Government would support Health secretary Dr Osbourne Liko and Minister Jelta Wong in getting the plans implemented.

In the law and justice sector, the Government wants the new court buildings completed, including the K400 million Supreme Court house.

“I will also ensure that Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac) gets delivered under my time as prime minister,” he said.

“I will also refine the Whistleblowers Act to strengthen its functions to run parallel with the Ombudsman to ensure we fight corruption that is so rampant.”
