PNG Prime Minister Marape calls for Foreign Intervention as Corruption crippling his country
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has called for foreign intervention in the position of Commissioner for Independent Commission Against Corruption and other top positions in the state departments.
Mr Marape said this is to put an end to nepotism and corruption in the country.
He made this call when speaking to the Australian High Commissioner to PNG Jon Philp recently in Port Moresby.
Marape says the increase in the bribery and wantok system experienced at the top state departments are becoming concern in the country.
He says, in the next 10 to 15 years, higher positions in the key state departments particularly Police and ICAC will be filled by non-Papua New Guinean starting with the position of Commissioner for ICAC that will be advertised soon.
''Our ICAC position of the Comissioner will be advertised, for the first 10 or 15 years we want overseas Commissioners and not Papua New Guineans.
''So they come in and they rise above wantok system and all the relationship we have in this country to run this organisation,'' said Marape.
Mr Marape also says, the government will also call for foreign interventions especially with the position for police prosecution, in order to be detached from wantok system in the police force.
