Using Technology to Improve Agriculture in PNG
The Papua New Guinea Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) participated in a workshop organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), as part of the EU-STREIT PNG Programme and in partnership with the National Weather Service (NWS). The workshop focused on the Agricultural Meteorological Advisory Monitoring and Services (AMAMAS) digital solution.
MAMAS is a digital solution developed and technically supported by the Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES) for Africa and Asia. It provides farmers with crucial weather and climate data to improve their agricultural practices.
DICT, as the lead ICT Agency in Digital Transformation, joined forces with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the National ICT Authority of Papua New Guinea in the workshop.
Participants gained valuable insights into climate change and its impact on agriculture. They also learned how to integrate weather/climate forecasting into their agricultural management practices using AMAMAS's decision support system tool.
DICT's participation in this workshop is a part of its ongoing efforts to promote digital transformation in Papua New Guinea. As DICT and its partners navigate operations and processes across different levels of government, they are exploring solutions and best practices to improve efficiency and align with the MTDP IV and the Digital Government Plan 2023-2027.
Despite the challenges ahead, the DICT team remains dedicated to achieving a digital government for Papua New Guinea.
