PNG Police Commissioner Suspended, Government Declares State of Emergency
In response to widespread riots and looting that engulfed business establishments and supermarkets in the nation's capital, a 14-day State of Emergency has been officially declared in Port Moresby. Prime Minister James Marape, making the announcement, concurrently disclosed the suspension of Police Commissioner David Manning. The Prime Minister asserted his commitment to a comprehensive investigation into the alleged sponsorship of protests and unrest.
Prime Minister Marape issued a stern warning, asserting his authority to replace any rogue and undisciplined police officers with new recruits from the Bomana Police College. The move is aimed at restoring order and discipline within the police force during this critical period.
During the State of Emergency, Deputy Police Commissioner Operations, Donald Yamasombi, has been appointed as the Acting Commissioner to oversee law enforcement activities. The Prime Minister expressed confidence in Yamasombi's ability to maintain order during this challenging period.
In addition to the suspension of Police Commissioner Manning, other heads of key departments have also faced suspension. The list includes Finance Secretary Sam Penias, Treasury Secretary Andrew Oaeke, and the Secretary for the Department of Personnel Management, Taies Sansan.
The suspensions are indicative of the government's commitment to addressing the root causes of the unrest and ensuring accountability across various sectors. The State of Emergency reflects a decisive measure to bring stability to Port Moresby and underscores the gravity of the situation as the government takes steps to restore calm and normalcy.
