PNG Prime Minister Marape Reappoints Rainbo Paita as Minister, Strengthening Cabinet
PNG Prime Minister James Marape has reappointed Finschhafen MP and OUR Party leader Rainbo Paita as Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Special Projects. Paita’s return to the 39-member Cabinet marks a crucial step in stabilizing the government following his departure in 2024, when he aligned with a coalition that unsuccessfully attempted a vote-of-no-confidence. Alongside Paita, Menyamya MP Solen Loifa has been sworn in as Vice Minister Assisting the Prime Minister, further bolstering the leadership team.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at Government House, was officiated by Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae, with the presence of fellow ministers, MPs, and supporters. Paita’s reappointment to the Cabinet fills the 39th position, marking a key moment in the government’s stability and cohesion. Prime Minister Marape welcomed the return, emphasizing that Paita’s wealth of experience would be essential in advancing the country’s goals.
Prime Minister Marape underscored that Paita’s reappointment highlights the enduring strength of the coalition government. “It is now 39 out of 39, and we welcome his experience back into Cabinet,” Marape stated. He noted that Paita’s leadership of OUR Party, along with his MPs, provides significant support to the coalition, contributing 14 members—a powerful force within the government.
Marape highlighted Paita’s decision to rejoin the government as a reflection of shared commitment to national progress. “When OUR Party rejoined in November 2024, they immediately deployed their numbers to support the government in passing key constitutional laws. This unwavering loyalty is exactly what we need for meaningful reforms,” Marape remarked.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of 2025 as a milestone year for Papua New Guinea, as the country celebrates its 50th anniversary. He outlined major reforms in resource laws, decentralization, and governance, all vital for reshaping the nation’s political and economic structures. These reforms are critical to improving service delivery and ensuring sustainable growth.
In the coming weeks, Prime Minister Marape announced plans for a performance review of the government. “Over the next two weeks, I will meet with all ministers and departmental heads to set clear expectations. Key performance indicators have already been issued, and we expect tangible results,” Marape said.
The Prime Minister concluded by warmly welcoming both Paita and Loifa to their new roles, stressing the importance of their contributions in advancing the government’s agenda. “Congratulations to the leader of OUR Party, the new Vice Minister, and the reappointed Minister. Together, we will continue working towards a brighter future for Papua New Guinea,” Marape stated.
