PNG Bulolo Land Dispute leaves 13 dead, Police move in to restore order
A violent clash over land in Sambio village, Bulolo district in Papua New Guinea has left thirteen people dead, prompting a strong police presence in the area as authorities move to stabilise tensions.
Police units have been deployed to Sambio following the outbreak of fighting last weekend, with security forces now closely monitoring movements along the Wau–Bulolo corridor.
Bulolo MP Sam Basil Junior has strongly condemned the killings, describing the incident as unacceptable and urging all parties involved to seek peaceful solutions through dialogue.
District Administrator Joseph O’Brian Paru confirmed the confrontation stemmed from a dispute between villagers and a mining lease holder operating along the Sambio river area. He said the situation remains tense despite police intervention.
Morobe Provincial Police Commander Samson Siguyaru acknowledged support from the Bulolo District administration in facilitating the rapid deployment of officers. He assured that police will maintain a visible presence to ensure safety for residents and travellers.
MP Basil, speaking during a media briefing, called on Lands Minister John Rosso to urgently review and potentially revoke the mining lease tied to the disputed land.
He also raised concerns about the Mineral Resources Authority’s licensing processes, urging stricter on-ground assessments before approvals are granted to avoid future conflicts of this nature.
The MP further appealed for restraint on social media, warning that individuals spreading content related to the violence may face action under cybercrime laws. He also extended condolences to families who lost loved ones in the deadly confrontation.
