PNG Education Launches AI-Powered EduNEX Platform and National ICT Policy

Papua New Guinea has taken another step towards modernising its education system with the official launch of a new national digital learning platform and an Integrated Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Policy aimed at improving teaching and learning across the country.

Education Minister Francis Kikin Siune officially unveiled the AI-powered EduNEX Learning Management System on Thursday, saying the initiative would expand access to quality education for students regardless of where they live while supporting teachers with modern digital tools.

The EduNEX platform has been developed as Papua New Guinea's national learning management system and contains curriculum resources, digital classrooms and assessment tools designed for both students and teachers. It also features NEXA AI, an artificial intelligence system developed in PNG by Papua New Guinean developers.

Mr Siune said the launch marked the beginning of a new chapter for the country's education sector as schools embrace technology to improve learning outcomes.

He said the government was not simply introducing another digital platform but creating new opportunities for schools, teachers and students throughout the country.

The minister said the initiative was particularly important as more than 80 per cent of Papua New Guinea's population lives in rural communities where access to educational resources remains a challenge.

As part of the rollout, internet connectivity will be introduced through Starlink and DataCo, beginning with the country's National Schools of Excellence before expanding to secondary and primary schools.

The ICT policy also requires schools using the system to have firewall protection to safeguard students from inappropriate online content while promoting a unified national approach to digital education.

Mr Siune said technology should be available to every student and teacher rather than benefiting only a small number of schools.

He also assured teachers that artificial intelligence would support, rather than replace, their work in the classroom.

"We are not simply launching a digital platform. We are opening the door to a new era of teaching, learning and educational leadership."

"Artificial intelligence should never replace the teacher. Instead, it should remove routine tasks so teachers can spend more time inspiring young minds."

"Technology must benefit every student and teacher – and not just a privileged few."

"Every successful learner has a teacher who believed in them. EduNEX is a tool that supports your professionalism and expands your ability to reach every child."

"The future belongs to those who never stop learning. Embrace this opportunity!"
