Lawyer beats up woman

The Victim. Lero Kobol was beaten up by her son-inlaw.
A mother of six children was reportedly beaten up by a lawyer.  It was around 11pm, when the year 2013 was drawing to an end, when 39-year-old married mother, Lero Kobol with six children from Mendi, Southern Highlands, was beaten up.

A police statement from the Boroko Police station had confirmed that Mrs Kobol was beaten by her 44-year-old son-inlaw (named) who is believed to be a lawyer from a private law firm.

With a bruised face, she emotionally told the reporters yesterday that, since 2012, she had received threats from him saying that he would shoot and kill her one fine day. She said her daughters were also abused but this was not reported as they were afraid of the threats that he told her. Mrs Kobol said the perpetrator had abused her daughters, including her daughter Loise Soka whom he was married to.

She said this had caused her daughter to live with her parents because she was mistreated by him.

"Mi stap wantaim pikinini na famili blo mipla lon June Valley, rent haus blo pikinini meri, Loise (I live with my children and family in June Valley. Loise, my daughter pays the rent).

At the time of Lero’s assault, Loise was not at home with her mum. "At 11pm, he came into the family home, saw me sleeping and shouted: ‘Where is Loise? You wanted to watch over your daughter.

"He walked towards me, and punched my face. I ran out of the house and ran over to my sister’s house, he followed me and hit me with a rim of a tyre several times,’’ she said.

Medical reports and x-ray from the Port Moresby General Hospital which showed that Mrs Kobol physically sustained severe and multiple bodily injuries. She had bruises and cuts on her head, black eye on the left side, swollen nose, broken lips and left tall man finger, loose teeth and dislocated jaws.

She is recovering from the severe body aches and pain from punches and kicks from the perpetrator’s boots and from the tyre rims.

"I trusted him as a son-inlaw, and a prominent senior lawyer who should know the laws very well and be a law abiding person.

"Instead, he is a liar and from what he has been doing to my daughters and I, shows that he is not abiding by the laws and I appeal to the relevant authorities to deal with this issue accordingly,’’ she said.

Phone calls to get comments from the perpetrator were ignored and unsuccessful.
