Parkop threatened over buai ban
Port Moresby Governor, Powes Parkop |
Threats have been issued to NCD Governor Powes Parkop and his family in response to the total betel nut ban beginning on Tuesday.
Rumours have also been circulating of disgruntled vendors saying they will resort to armed robbery and kidnapping small children to get the attention of the Governor.
Governor Parkop confirmed with PNG Edge that he has received threats to him and his family’s life, and has also been briefed by the police. However, Parkop says he will not back down.
“We will not be deterred nor will I submit to these threats,” said Parkop. “Betel nut has caused so much problems for the city. These threats are from irresponsible people who are only concerned about their self-interest and not the general wellbeing of the city.”
Other rumours have surfaced that vendors will resort to kidnapping children and robbing members of the public. And this will happen if the ban is not lifted.
