SP PNG Hunters down Tweed Heads Seagulls 36 - 26
The SP PNG Hunters ran home with a victory over Tweed Heads Seagulls 36 - 26 in front of a large crowd at the Kalabond oval in Kokopo this afternoon.
Hunters opened the scoreboard with 2 tries from Timothy Lomai and Roger Laka. Laka kicked 2 from 2, to put his side in front with a 12 point lead in the first quarter of the game.
The visitors recouped and also scored 2 tries through Michael Burgess and Kalafi Faifai Loua, but one failed conversion left them 2 points short of an equalizer.
But a mistake by the Hunters provided the Seagulls with the opportunity to square up through a penalty.
Both teams were at 12 all by half time. The Seagulls wasted no time coming out for the second 40 minutes, with Luke Dumas putting the first of his 2 tries.
After 2 drastic failed attempts at the Seagulls territory, Wartovo Puara Jnr finally sailed through under the post, complemented by Noel Zemming's conversion.
Their 2 point margin was short-lived as Dumas again broke through the Hunters defence line, scoring his second try for the match.
The host side had 3 more tries before the Seagulls closed the match with the final try for the afternoon through Tom Kingston.
The Hunters have 2 away games before they go on bye.
