SP PNG Hunters fall to Burleigh Bears 26 - 22
Burleigh Bears stopped PNG Hunters second half fight back in a entertaining game at Pizzey Park on the Gold Coast this afternoon with a win 26 - 22 points..
Trailing 20-4 at half time, the Hunters fought valiantly in the second half running in three tries giving the Bears a scare.
Two penalties in the opening two minutes of the second half gave the Hunters the opportunity to attack the Bears try line from 20 meters out.
The Hunters spread the ball wide through Dion Aiye, who passed the ball to Thompson Teteh.
Teteh then threw the final pass to put Garry Lo in for his second try of the game. Noel Zemming could not convert the extras leaving the Hunters trailing at 20-8.
Good attack from the Hunters forced Bears to make errors and the Hunters were in to score again in the 50th minute through Willie Minoga who scored beside the posts. Zemming this time converted to put the Hunters right back in the game.
Hunters kept the pressure mounting and six minutes later were awarded a penalty right in front of the posts. Zemming slotted the kick over to leave the Hunters 4 points shy of levelling the scores.
More errors from the Bears allowed the Hunters to gain easy possession and keep attacking the Hunters try line.
In the 70th minute, a short ball from play maker Israel Eliab sent a barging David “Locomotion” Loko over to score near the uprights. Zemming did the rest converting to hit the lead at 22-20.
The Bears however had the last laugh scoring a soft try five minutes out from full time to steal the win away from the Hunters, 26 – 22 to the Bears.
