Siune ready for North's Devils
PNG Hunters rampaging prop Esau Siune is prepared to put his body on the line for the team in this weekend’s Queensland Cup clash against North’s Devils.
It’s not easy as the 25 players in the camp at Bomana Police College are aware that to secure a spot in the final 17, means hard work and be rewarded – and that’s a principle Siune has lived and trained by while waiting for his chance to cement a spot in Michael Marum’s starting team.
Siune said the atmosphere in camp was very competitive and there was no room for mediocrity as Marum was a no-nonsense coach.
From the bench to the starting 13 against Wynnum Manly Seagulls, Siune said he was always going to make the most of any opportunity and when Marum called on the 26-year-old to fill in the void left by Timothy Lomai, the Kundiawa native did not blink an eye – he was determined to leave his mark on the game one way or another.
Siune could not have scripted it any better after starting the game with only three players on the bench and none of them props, the Hunters mettle was further tested when No.10 Joe Bruno left the field concussed.
Siune picked up the slack and by his actions screamed at his comrades, ‘follow me’.
“We were one man down and few of our key players injured and one suspended, the onus was left on us to carry the important task to win the game,” a modest Siune said.
Standing at 180cm and weighing 101kg and with a appetite for hit-ups, Siune has earned his spot in the No.8 jersey for another week.
