Work on Sir John Guise Stadium progressing well

The Minister for Sports, Pacific Games & National Events Justin Tkatchenko has inspected  the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex which is under construction, accompanied by Chairman of 2015 Games Venues Committee, Costas Constantinou, Senior Projects Manager Shane Philips from Peddle Thorp Architects guided around the site by Project Manager from Pheonix Construction Limited, Mr Low Yikfoo.

Currently built at the cost of K60million, the new Indoor Complex upon completion will cater for  a capacity of 2, 000 people which is double the number from its original capacity.

The Complex will house the sporting codes of Weightlifting, Basketball, Boxing and all Martial Art Sports.

The Complex is constructed by Pheonix Construction Limited and Managed by Peddle Thorp Architects a New Zealand based company representing the PNG Government under 2015 Games Committee to oversee the work been done.

“This is not been done lightly and they have a very tight schedule to ensure they finish this whole facility by end of May 2015,” said Minister Tkatchenko.

Tkatchenko had a meeting with the contractors and they have discussed on building the capacity of workers so that so that they can accomplish the goal of finishing it on time.

“We have been reassured that as per the 1st of November once all the materials are here, they will be working three shifts a day right until the whole place is completed and finished,” adds Tkatchenko.

He said despite minor issues with other projects that are taking place, they have all been sorted out and he is happy that the work done at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex as well as other sites are going good and are on target to be completed on time before the Games are held.

According to the contractors and the Project Managers the materials that will be used for the Indoor facility plus the Out-door track and field facility are of world class similar to the stadiums that were used to build the London Olympic stadiums.

Minister Tkatchenko made it clear that the reason why a lot of money has been spent on these facilities is to see them last for more than 20 to 30 years and also for the benefit of the country.
