PNG fall to New Zealand 3 - 0
Papua New Guinea suffered its first defeat against New Zealand Ferns 3-0 in Day two of the Oceania Football Confederation Women’s Nations Cup in Kokopo, East New Britain.
PNG girls fought hard in the first half which had both teams scoreless at half time.
In the second half, Ferns were too strong in their line of defence and passes to outclass the home side.
Hat trick star Meagen Gunemba was cautioned for a tackle on Rebekah Stott 53 minutes into play as PNG struggled to break the opposing team’s defence line.
The visitors dominated the second half of the game which put PNG under instant pressure in their defensive third.
New Zealand scored their first goal 14 minutes into the second half 1-0 through Rebekah Stott who fired from the top of the box, beating Watpore with a low drive.
Ten minutes later Amber Hearn scored New Zealand’s second goal 2-0 headed by Rosie White.
New Zealand scored again 3-0 in the final minute before full time through Annalie Longo who bounced the ball into the back of the net on the volley.
In the first match, Tonga drew with Cook Islands 1-1.
After Day two, New Zealand remains on top of the points ladder with six points, PNG in second place on three points, Cook Islands in third and Tonga in fourth place, both countries share one point.
PNG will take on Tonga on Wednesday Oct 29 while New Zealand takes on the Cooks in the final day of the tournament.
