Prime Minister O'Neill opens Lae International Port
The new Lae International Port is a vital project in the city that will serve bigger ships coming in from other countries.
Therefore, PNG Ports employees must improve the level of service to its customers.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill told employees during the official opening of the new Lae International port today.
O’Neill said it is the trading port is a gateway for the people of Papua New Guinea and as a result customer service must be up to the expected standard.
He said staff in Lae must make sure ships coming into the port are checked and cleared in record time.
The 100 metre extension of the new port despite exceeding the targeted budget was completed 4 months ahead of its completion date set at a cost of K150 million.
O’Neill has promised to pump in more money in the coming year to develop the country’s second largest city after having experienced the current road condition from Nadzab to Lae.
In the meantime, Minister for Public Enterprise and State Investment Ben Micah said Lae City is finally witnessing real tangible development happening in the city which has never been happening in the past.
Micah said such development is important as it not only serve a minority of people, however captures the vast population of this country.
Micah added, the K150milllion port project is an enormous investment in Lae City from the national government.
Saying the investment will benefit the people of Papua New Guinea as well as stakeholders.
Micah explained the port will have the capacity to accommodate overseas ships coming into the city. Adding, Lae will become the largest hub in the Pacific region.
