South Sydney Rabbitohs coach in PNG
Premierships winning South Sydney Rabbitohs NRL coach Michael Maguire walked the Kokoda track as part of a charity walk for their Young Guns Academy.
While in the country, Maguire had the chance to be part of the League bilong Laif clinic, which was staged at the Sogeri Primary School.
Excited children, parents, teachers and supporters of the Rabbitohs team were on hand during the occasion to see the champion winning coach at Sogeri on Saturday.
Maguire who is on his first trip to PNG said that he has always wanted to visit the country, and seeing the children enjoying rugby league is special to him.
"It’s incredible to be a part of something like this, I have always seen photos of PNG and seeing the children having fun is a part of the global experience of rugby league," he said.
When asked about his walk, Maguire said it is a learning experience for him and he is looking forward to taking on the challenge for the World War Two track.
Children were taught on the importance of respect and education, whilst going through simple drills and were taught basic skills on how to kick, catch and pass the ball.
Fun games were organised as well. The children also had a chance to ask questions to Maguire. The most asked question was about Rabbitohs star full back Greg Inglis.
Maguire said the standard of the game has developed imnensly and being here has opened his eyes to the game.
He said has seen the PNG Hunters play and said, the team has developed into a strong team, and added that the Rabbitohs is always on the lookout for new talent.
Supported by Australia and delivered by the NRL, the League bilong Laif program will provide 50,000 PNG boys and girls, including those with disability, the opportunity to participate in rugby leaguebased activities at school to encourage healthy lifestyles and boost physical, social, literacy and maths skills.
