Samsung announces new type of TV
The TV – known as SUHD – blends 4K resolution with a new display technology to produce deeper contrast with very deep black colours. In total, Samsung says it’s 64 times more colour than a conventional TV.
Although the firm didn’t call the new technology “quantum dot”, it appears to be the same tech used in both Sony and more recent LG TVs.
In its press release, Samsung describes it as “[a] nano-crystal semiconductor [that] transmits different colours of light depending on their size”. The basis of these screens remains LCD panels.
Samsung has previously sold OLED TVs, but at the moment the firm doesn’t have any listed on its website. Only LG seems to be producing OLED screens in any volume.
Sony and Panasonic have both promised TVs based on the technology, but so far no-one has come up with a mass market product. While LG is claiming they are the future, they still cost more and have potentially shorter lifespans than LCD TVs.
Samsung’s TVs for 2015 also feature the Tizen operating system, which is going to give its smart TV platform a boost, and supplies it with a similar strategy to LG’s WebOS, which has just been updated to a new version, also announced at CES.
It opens up more options for apps and gaming than before and should also offer more speed.
There will be three SUHD TVs on sale this year – known as JS9500, JS9000 and JS8500 – although some of these may not launch in the UK, or have different model numbers if they do. There is currently no clear pricing information, either.
