Microsoft planning a subscription version of Windows
Microsoft could be working on a subscription-based version of Windows, a trademark filing suggests.
The firm has trademarked the term ‘Windows 365′, prompting speculation that the operating system could adopt the same business model as Office, reports Neowin.
Windows 365 is likely to be a cloud-based version of the software, accessible for an annual fee, just as Office 365 provides a subscription-based alternative to the desktop service.
However, Microsoft recently announced that Windows 7 and Windows 8 users will be offered a free upgrade to Windows 10 for the first year.
This could make the subscription service a hard sell and make it difficult for Windows 365 to gain traction at launch.
Windows 10 will exit its Technical Preview phase in April ahead of a full launch later this year.
