PDF calls for the mainstreaming of women and girls with disabilities
The Pacific Disability Forum calls on governments; development partners, CSOs, NGOs, disability stakeholders and the private sector around the region to include women and girls with disabilities in their programs and activities as the world commemorate International Women’s Day with the theme “Make It Happen”.
The inclusion of women and girls with disabilities in all levels of decision making, planning and policies developments ensures that they have an equal share in economic, social, cultural and political decision-making.
Women and girls with disabilities continue to face barriers, because of their disability which, often isolate or marginalise them. They are, denied their human rights, access to education and vocational training, employment, housing and economic self-sufficiency that often denied the opportunity for them to contribute to their communities as part of the mainstream.
Previously, women and girls with disabilities have been left out of mainstream development. Therefore, PDF are working closely with its partners to ensure that women and girls with disabilities are included in the post-2015 development agenda. International Women’s Day (8 March 2015) comes at a crucial time as negotiations to agree the post-2015 development agenda reach its critical stage.
PDF would like to emphasise that to successfully include the rights and interest of women and girls with disabilities in the post 2015 agenda requires strong commitment on the part of Governments, international organisations, CSOs, NGOs, private sector and institutions at all levels around the region.
Respecting, recognising and valuing the full diversity of the situations and conditions that women and girls with disabilities face particularly the barriers to their empowerment is vital in ensuring that their rights and interest are promoted and protected in the post 2015 agenda.
We urge all Pacific leaders, donors, development partners, private sectors, NGOs and CSOs to engage Disabled Peoples Organisations (DPOs) and women with disabilities, to remove barriers faced by them and make the realisation of their rights and interest happen.
