Police to probe case of two Fiji girls

POLICE in Port Moresby and Fiji are expected to work together to investigate  the  two Fijian females found in the capital city last week.
National Capital District Metropolitan Police Commander Godwin Dukaduka said he had contacted police in Fiji who told him that they were waiting for a report from the Social Welfare Department on the two women.
A 14-year-old girl brought to Port Moresby in December by a businesswoman was found at a motel in Boroko last week.
The 21-year-old woman who had been missing from Fiji for about two years was found as well. Both were put on an Air Niugini flight to Fiji last Friday.
Dukaduka,  who was formerly in charge of the Transnational Crime Unit, said the Fijian High Commission should have sought the help of the local police to find the two women.
“I learnt about the Fijian girls’ story in the media and called my colleagues in Fiji (who) told me that they are awaiting reports from the Social Welfare workers. Fijian police will then contact us for assistance,” he said.
Fiji media reported yesterday that the two girls had bruises on their bodies, according to Rosy Akbar, the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, who visited them after their arrival in Fiji.
“It’s a very sad case that the two girls were subjected to some harsh conditions when they were taken to PNG,” Akbar said.
The teenage girl’s mother had contacted the Fiji High Commission in PNG last week after she failed to return home by the start of school in January.
The 21-year-old woman has returned to her family but the girl remains under the care of Social Welfare workers.. PNG Today/The National
