Fiji Opposition boycott Parliament sitting, MP suspended for two years

Members of Fiji's Opposition boycotted today’s sitting of Parliament.

When the House resumed this morning, Speaker, Dr Jiko Luveni informed Government Members that the Opposition met her in Chambers to inform her that they will not attend today’s sitting.

She said the Opposition has requested that their oral questions and petitions be carried forward to the next sitting.

The Parliamentary session continued with Government members asking their questions and putting their motions before the House.

Meanwhile, Opposition Parliamentarian, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has been suspended from the Fijian Parliament for two years. His suspension which comes into effect immediately is for breach of his parliamentary privilege.

He was cited by the Privileges Committee for using abusive language and making derogatory comments about Speaker of the Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni at a constituency meeting in Makoi last Thursday.

The report of the Committee which was presented in Parliament earlier today by the chairman and Deputy Speaker, Ruveni Nadalo, was debated until 9pm after which a vote was taken.

27 MPs voted in favour of the Committee’s recommendation, 18 voted against and 4 did not vote.

And the Opposition’s motion that if any breach is found, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu should be asked to withdraw the comments he made and that be the end of the matter was also defeated during the suspension

Ratu Naiqama will not be allowed to enter the parliamentary precincts including the Opposition Office and he must also issue a public apology in writing to the Speaker.
