Closer Ties to be Built Between Papua New Guinea and United Kingdom
The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Hon. Peter O'Neill CMG MP, met with his British counterpart, Rt Hon David Cameron MP, at Number 10 Downing Street in London where both leaders agreed on the need for stronger engagement between the two countries.
In the wide-ranging discussion before the traditional Trooping the Queen's Colour in celebration of the birthday of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, on Saturday 13th June, the two Prime Ministers discussed opportunities for increased cooperation.
"Prime Minister Cameron is looking to strengthen relations with partner countries, especially Commonwealth nations, and we too would like to increase our trade and cultural engagement with the United Kingdom," Prime Minister O'Neill said after the meeting.
pm uk. "David Cameron and I had a good discussion on matters of regional importance and he wished Papua New Guinea well for the Pacific Games next month and our hosting APEC in 2018.
"He is also very aware of the changes that have been taking place in Papua New Guinea in recent years and the new optimism that comes with economic growth.
"There are a number of opportunities for increased cooperation between our countries in trade, investment as well as cultural and educational exchange.
"There are already a number of Papua New Guinean students attending British universities and this could increase.
"We also have the opportunity for British students to come to Papua New Guinea as part of their university programs and to do their research."
Prime Minister O'Neill has invited Prime Minister Cameron to visit Papua New Guinea at his convenience.
"I would like Prime Minister Cameron to see for himself what Papua New Guinea has to offer, both as an investment location, and for tourism.
"British people, particularly the young men and women, are avid travellers and we would like to for them to see our country."
Prime Minister O'Neill will meet with investors and officials on Monday, then deliver the keynote address at the inaugural United Kingdom – Papua New Guinea Trade and Investment Forum in London on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister will also have an audience with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday, then travel to Brussels to meet the President of the European Commission, H.E. Jean-Claude Juncker. Further meetings include engagements with the business community in France before returning to Papua New Guinea at the end of the week.
