Oil Search Pacific Games Relay in Cairns, Australia

Over the weekend the Oil Search Pacific Games Relay made a special visit to Cairns, in North Queensland, to visit the large Papua New Guinea community based there.

The community hosted an informal picnic on the Esplanade of Cairns City where members of the Papua New Guinea community and Team Papua New Guinea athletes, currently training in Cairns, attended.

Cairns MP Rob Pyke made a formal welcome to the Relay team and expressed his delight at the Relay taking the time to visit as the city of Cairns was enjoying hosting the training teams and the Papua New Guinea community was becoming a major part of the North Queensland multi-cultural way of life.

Papua New Guinea Consul Rava Chapman thanked the team for remembering the large community living and working in North Queensland and on behalf of the community wished Team Papua New Guinea every success in the upcoming games.

Athletes from squash and lawn bowls took a break from their training to come join in the festivities, take photos with the Baton and to meet their Papua New Guinea wantoks based in Cairns.

The team spent the afternoon telling stories about the 20 provinces that have been part of the journey so far.

The Oil Search Pacific Games Relay heads into Central Province today.
