Operation Open Heart Training Program for PNG Doctors announced
Minister for Sports and National Events and Member for Moresby South Open, the Hon. Justin Tkatchenko MP, today announced an Operation Open Heart Training Program that will see further advancement in local cardiac surgeons in PNG.
Minister Tkatchenko, who is the Patron for Operation Open Heart PNG, said that under this new program, Dr Elizabeth Alok would be funded to further her specialist training in cardiothoracic surgery in Singapore. Dr Alok is currently working at the Port Moresby General Hospital and has already begun her training locally under the mentorship of PNG’s Chief Cardiac Surgeon Dr Noah Tapaua.
“I congratulate Elizabeth not only as the first woman in PNG to study in this field but as a doctor who will train other doctors and look after others in Papua New Guinea,” Minister Tkatchenko said.
Deputy Chairlady at the Port Moresby General Hospital and Operation Open Heart PNG Coordinator Kathy Johnson said the key to the success of Operation Open Heart PNG has been strong government, private sector and community support. “My aim is to set up a cardiac unit and to continue training that can extend to other major hospitals in PNG,” Ms Johnson said.
Minister Tkatchenko also thanked the team of Australian medical volunteers including cardiac specialists from OOH International who are currently in Port Moresby providing their specialist services to Papua New Guineans.
