PNG Prime Minister Peter O'Neill outraged Over Rape in Manus
Reports of the alleged drugging and raping of a local female employee at the Manus Asylum Seeker Centre has outraged Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.
Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said he will get to the bottom of it, and get hold of those responsible. Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said the incident has happened on PNG soil and local police should have handled the matter by investigating.
“I have instructed for an internal investigation to this matter and will talk to all concerned authorities,” Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill said.
The Prime Minister also supported Police Commissioner, Gari Baki, saying that PNG Police are capable of handling this matter and is questioning who deported the 3 suspects out of PNG.
The Police Commissioner, Gari Baki, was disappointed with the process taken by authorities in Manus over this incident. Commissioner Baki said currently RPNGC has no say in how the criminal investigations involving the asylum seekers are conducted and that needs to change.
“We have the capacity and are obliged to handle any police matter committed in the country,” Baki said.
Meanwhile a spokesperson from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection attributed that the Department was made aware however, said the alleged incident had no criminal nature.
They further stated that the alleged incident was inconsistent with expected behaviors contrary to the service providers’ code of conduct.
EMTV News was told the 3 officers were stood down from duty and returned to Australia as part of standard procedures. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection said to cooperate with any investigations by PNG Authorities.
