Polye urges ‘young leaders’ to follow founding fathers ways

Press Release
Opposition Leader Don Pomb Polye has called on young leaders of PNG not to deviate from the true principles of good governance set by the founding fathers.

Mr Polye said the founding fathers had built the foundation of this nation on Christian principles and these principles must be maintained at all times.

“Institutions of government such as the Ombudsman Commission, the court system and the police force among others play an important role in the existence of a nation and these institutions must never be weakened,” said Mr Polye.

“I see a number of leaders when in trouble running to the courts to obtain restraining orders against Ombudsman Commission or the Public Prosecutor,  thus frustrating the system of governance,” he said.

He described this trend as dangerous for the survival of a nation.

Polye said this while paying tribute to the founding fathers of this nation.

He made special mention of Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare who steered the country to independence and also made mention of the late Sir Peter Simogun and Sir Pita Lus for their contribution towards nation building.

Polye urged the leaders of today to charter a new destiny for PNG for the next 40 years.

The Opposition Leader was in East Sepik province just days after the country’s 40th Independence Anniversary.

He visited the province for two reasons, to thank the leaders and the people of ESP for raising sons like Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare who led the country into Independence.

He was also in the province at the invitation of a women’s group from Dagua, West Coast where he made several financial contributions to the high school, the primary school, health centre and even the womens’ association.

He presented K10, 000 to assist the high school, additional K10, 000 for the primary school, additional K10, 000 for the Health Centre and K5000 for the women’s group.

Polye received a rousing welcome from the people of Dagua as soon as he stepped out of the helicopter.

A traditional welcome ceremony was held in which he was given a headdress to wear, a necklace and a basket symbolising his acceptance as a son and a leader into the Sepik society.

He was then escorted by the traditional dancing groups to the arena where the waiting crowd greeted him with jubilation.

The people also shared sentiments that vital services were not reaching down to the village level despite PNG being independent for 40 years.

Mr Polye agreed with the people, saying that leaders had deviated from the destiny set by the founding fathers.

He said services were not reaching down to the people simply because the strengths such as Christian principles and institutions of governance were not up-held by successive governments.

He said our rich resources were being mismanaged by those in power in collaboration with corporate giants in the name of development.

“These strengths that the nation has been built on are seriously threatened and could be at the brink of collapse by the current government through corruption, abuse, mismanagement of economy and devoid of leading in the right path for true development,” he said.

“While PNG is suffering the El Nino induced drought, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has also added onto the nation yet another suffering, O’Neill induced drought,” said the Opposition Leader.

He, however, said PNG still had a chance to turn this country around in terms of development.

“The Sepik plains presents to PNG the best solution as the food and cash crop security basket for PNG’s economy prosperity, so do other valleys like Waghi, Markham and Ramu plains and the New Guinea Islands and Papuan basins,” Mr Polye added.

He said leaders must realise this potential and develop this fully to serve our people.

“It is Christian values of honesty, good governance, truthfulness and uprightness that will exalt PNG and her citizens,” said the Opposition leader.
