BSP PNG Barramundis humbled by Afghanistan in I-CUP fixture

The BSP PNG Barramundis were humbled by Afghanistan on the final day of the Inter-Continental Cup (I-Cup) at the Sharjah International Stadium, losing by 201 runs.

Resuming the day on 4/110, chasing 390 for an unlikely victory, Assad Vala and Mahuru Dai started sensibly, taking the total to 131 before Dai was clean bowled by Sharafuddin Ashraf for 32. Captain, Jack Vare came and went as he was trapped Leg Before Wicket (LBW) next over for a duck, and when John Boge Reva (5) and Norman Vanua (0) fell shortly after, the BSP PNG Barramundis had slumped to 8/162 in the 54th over.

During this carnage, Vala was hitting the Afghanistan bowlers around to score another half century, but when Vala fell for a classy 81, becoming the Barramundis’ ninth wicket, the game was buried. Chad Soper (15) was the last wicket to fall, with the BSP PNG Barramundis eventually dismissed for 188, losing the match outright by 201 runs. Yamin Ahmadzai (5/41) and Zahir Khan (4/25) were the main wicket-takers for Afghanistan.

BSP PNG Barramundis’ star player of the match, Dai was very disappointed with the overall result of the match but was happy with his individual performance.

“We are very down at the moment after losing this match especially after having a huge lead in the first innings. This match is a huge learning experience for us,” said Dai after the match.

“Personally, I am very proud of my performances during the match. Scoring a century in the first innings is one of my favourite cricket moments of my career,” concluded Dai.

Dai became only the second PNG player to score a century in the I-Cup after Vala score a century against Netherlands in June. Dai also picked up three wickets during the match.

The BSP PNG Barramundis return home to Port Moresby tomorrow, before preparing for the Round 3 I-CUP home fixture against Ireland in late January.
