Port Moresby's Saraga 6mile market opens

The 6mile Market in Port Moresby was opened this morning. The construction of the market took an estimated 5 months to complete, at a cost K5million with half of the monetary fund coming from the New Zealand High Commission in partnership with the National Government.

The market is an open air plan it allows free flow of air and it can cater for up to 20,000 people with amenities, such as water, electricity, public toilet, and a police station nearby and above all the market needs least maintenance, which means it will last a long time.

Sports Minister, Tkatchenko said 6mile was notorious with a bad image and the people were neglected, but with the new market built for the people of 6mile and Moresby South comes a new beginning for the people to sell their goods in a clean, safe and healthy environment painting a positive image for the area.
The new market was officially opened by Prime Minister Peter O’Neil and Member for Moresby South and Sports Minister, Justin Tkatchenko.
