Port Moresby selected to be part of a global project
Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby has been selected by the International Olympic Committee as one of the 7 pilot cities in the world for the Global Active City Development project. This was announced by the PNG Olympic Committee and NCD Governor Powes Parkop today.
The purpose of this project is to establish an active framework of cities targeting all interested cities around the world amongst which Olympic cities will have a lead role to play.
“Port Moresby was selected based on consultation with the Governor and our nomination was submitted to be one of the pilot project cities. And we’ve been selected, thanks to the Walk for Life and Yoga for Life programs by the Governor which captures the ideals of the Active City Project,” says Sir John.
Sir John gave credit to Governor Parkop and his team for their program aimed at promoting Port Moresby as a Healthy and active city as this will then lead the way forward for residents in other cities.
Governor Parkop re-emphasised that part of this initiative is to address life style diseases and shorter life span that is a big issue amongst Papua New Guineans.
“I’m Confident that we will be successful in the seven cities that were selected to be part of this Active cities project because the People of Port Moresby have shown over one and half years that we are an active city. Our residents have shown that they are willing to take control of their health and improve it,” says Governor Parkop.
According the PNG Olympic committee General Secretary, Mrs Auvita Rapilla Port Moresby was one of the seven cities out 205 National Olympic Committee bodies around the world that were invited and that is a bonus to the already existing programs initiated by the Governor.
