PNG Education Department to focus on Teacher Quality
Provincial Education Advisors and Heads of the Department of Education gathered this morning at the Hideaway Hotel to discuss issues surrounding the Education Department and also ways forward in addressing these issues.
Minster for Education Nick Kuman welcomed the PEAs and he reminded each and every one of them that the meeting was called so every PEA in each province must know the directive of the government with policies that have been introduced lately.
“There are about 1.9 million students in the country who are currently benefiting from the TFF policy which was introduced 4 years ago but we have to ask ourselves whether we are delivering quality education to these number of students or not, and it all comes down to the quality of teachers”
“We all want our children to get a quality education but providing resources to schools or improving teaching materials will not give us that result except a quality teacher will make change in a child’s life” said Minister Kuman.
He said the Education Department’s core focus will be on Teacher quality from this year on as statistics have shown that a quality teacher is an important tool that has the greatest influences in a child’s life after 13 years of basic education.
Kuman says he expects nothing from the PEAs but quality education and quality out come in any administrative matters in their respective provinces.
“You must be diligent in your task, completing your reports on time and ensuring that the government’s policies are implemented efficiently and correctly in your area of responsibility as the PEAs of your provinces” said Minister Kuman.
Meanwhile, Provincial Education Advisors of Central, NCD and Enga province were the only ones that were not present during the meeting. PNGFM
