Vanuatu Police raid warehouse suspected of producing drugs
Vanuatu Police have discovered a warehouse in the outskirts of Port Vila which is suspected to be a standard laboratory for the production of drugs.
The property which is located at Pukura area on Devil’s Point Road has been sealed off as a “no-go-zone” and guarded by police.
An Australian national, Justine Winslet who was renting the property was arrested on Monday 22 February in connection with the discovery.
The laboratory was suspected of producing methamphetamine drugs. Methamphetamine is a powerful, highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system. Also known as meth, chalk, ice, and crystal, among many other terms, it takes the form of a white, odorless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water or alcohol.
The Australian Federal Police’s assistance have been sought to identify and confirm the suspected drugs and sources close to the police say two Federal Police forensic officers have arrived yesterday to carry out the test and confirm the substance.
Police raided and searched two private residences – one at Namba 2 in Port Vila and a property at Pango road.
The Magistrates Court confirmed Justine Winslet appeared briefly in court at 2pm on Thursday 25 February 2016 and was released on bail.
Police are continuing their investigation.
