Teachers attending to phone calls while teaching
A complain from an elementary student from Coronation Primary School prompted this newsroom to investigate a report that a particular elementary teacher in that school has been attending to phone calls during teaching and sometimes leaves the students unattended while she’s sitting under the tree chewing betelnut and texting away.
We visited the school today and managed to speak to the Teacher In Charge (TIC) for Elementary Teachers Mr Karuka Oru who didn’t seem surprise to receive such a report.
He said such practise not only happens in Coronation but in other schools as well despite the directive from authorities to switch off mobile phones during official hours.
“It’s becoming an habit to us teachers that whenever we have messages coming in, we need to attend to it so in that case we leave the students and go outside the classroom to talk to the person calling us or texting us”
Mr Oru says there are 18 elementary teachers with over 1500 students and that makes it quite difficult for him to monitor teachers at all times but he said to look into the reported matter and remind them on the directives from authorities on the usage of Mobile phone during official hours.
Meanwhile Mr Oru is calling on parents to report such matters to him or the Headmaster so teachers can be penalized for their actions. Read more on >> PNG Education News Online
